How to Write a Manager Review

Guide for managers on completing performance reviews for direct reports

2 min read

As a manager, you complete performance reviews for each of your direct reports through Nami in Slack. Before you start, Nami provides you with helpful context to write informed, fair assessments.

Receiving Your Assignment

When a cycle includes manager reviews, Nami sends you a DM for each direct report. The message includes contextual data to help you prepare:

  • Self-assessment average -- the employee's average self-rating across competencies
  • Previous cycle rating -- their overall rating from the last completed cycle (if available)
  • Goals count -- how many goals they have and their completion status

Info

You will not receive your manager review assignment until the employee's self-review deadline has passed or they have submitted their self-assessment, depending on cycle configuration.

Completing the Review

Click "Let's go" to begin. Nami presents each competency or question one at a time.

Rating Competencies

For each competency, you select a rating from 1 to 5. Consider the employee's performance over the entire review period, not just recent weeks. Refer to the competency descriptions provided in each question for level-appropriate expectations.

Writing Comments

After rating, Nami prompts you for written comments on key areas. Strong manager comments should:

  • Reference specific examples -- cite projects, deliverables, or behaviors
  • Acknowledge strengths -- highlight what the person does well before addressing growth areas
  • Be constructive on gaps -- frame improvement areas with actionable suggestions
  • Align with ratings -- if you rate someone a 2, explain why and what "Meets Expectations" looks like

Tip

Keep notes on direct report performance throughout the quarter. Writing reviews is significantly easier when you have specific examples ready rather than relying on memory.

Tracking Pending Reviews on the Dashboard

Visit Dashboard > Reviews to see all your pending manager review assignments. The page shows:

  • Employee name and department
  • Review status (Not Started, In Progress, Completed)
  • Deadline date
  • A link to continue in Slack if you started but did not finish

Warning

Incomplete manager reviews block the calibration phase. Ensure all your reviews are submitted before the manager review deadline to avoid delaying the cycle for your entire department.

After Submission

Once submitted, your review is:

  • Available for HR and Admin users to view in the calibration interface
  • Combined with self-review, peer, and upward feedback into a unified review profile
  • Shared with the employee only after the cycle is formally closed (unless your admin has configured earlier visibility)

Take your time with each review. Thoughtful manager feedback is the most impactful part of the performance process for your team members.
